Sweet Magnolia (street handout mix)
Calling Sister Midnight
Sweet Magnolia (street handout mix)
I’ve got my New Orleans street orchestra back with me and we are playing for tips on Jackson Square. Stefsax is playing along too, but behind him is this cobbled-stone alleyway. The rest of the band is playing in front of a big plate glass window next to an outdoor cafe.
At a table is a woman in her 30s who is being hit up by a street-wise riff-spouter. He’s funny but he doesn’t have a chance.
The song is about a man and a woman sitting under a magnolia tree in Audubon Park, a famous New Orleans park not far from Jackson Square. The tree is in bloom and its fragrance is everywhere. Though the young lady sitting under the tree, this “Sweet Magnolia,” is young, she is astute enough to know that what’s being said to her by the very charming and handsome stranger is 89% B.S. And she really doesn’t mind one bit.
Imagine Leon Redbone singing this one.
