Between Atoms, Between Stars

Ivan Chew

While signing up, I already decided my musical interpretation of ‘Interstellar’ must NOT sound like Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack for the movie. But it should invoke the vastness of space and time. And, I wanted to create an instrumental remix if possible.

Having Richard as my assignment was both easy (so many stems to choose from!) and a challenge. He’s been remixed so many times, and I only wanted stems yet to be remixed or at most once or twice. The search was made somewhat easier, as Richard had helpfully written the song key for his stems. In the end, I picked 4 of his uploads, with those in the key of A as the main structure. The remix is in 3 parts:

Part 1: “The Tinker” + “Moonrise”
Part 2: “Terrible Guitar Hackery in A” + “The Tinker”
Part 3: “The Tinker” + “Moonrise”

Other than the flute, everything you hear is by played Richard, especially the soulful guitar playing which I spliced and diced, and put through some amp plug-ins. The flute part is my original stem contribution to this remix.

Some words immediately came to mind when I listened to the track. Here it is, my pretensions as a poet. Enjoy.

Between Atoms, Between Stars
Peace is
A state of mind,

Where the space
Between atoms

Is like a journey
Between stars.
